Through D5.4 the '0' is displayed before starting the video initialization. Any failure in the video initialization code will cause '0' to be displayed continuously, in success cases it will be displayed for only a short time and then the boot will continue on.

Beginning in D5.6 the '0' will be displayed for a short time only when there is a failure to initialize the video, and then the boot will continue on. There are two types of failures 1.
